What is an AI visibility agency, and why are they growing?
AI visibility agencies are growing in Danish industry. Here is what they are, what they actually deliver, and why you might want to use one now.
What is an AI visibility agency?
An AI visibility agency is an agency that helps brands get recommended by the large language models. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. It is a specific discipline, not the same as SEO, content marketing, or traditional brand consultancy.
The category is around eighteen months old as a named category in Denmark. Two years ago it existed only as part of broader digital marketing agencies, usually explained as "we also do something with AI." Today there are at least a handful of agencies in Denmark working exclusively with AI visibility as their core offering. Valiss is one of them.
What an AI visibility agency actually does, we cover in section 3. First, it is worth understanding why the category emerged.
Why has the category emerged?
The short version: because a growing share of buyers use AI as their first search channel, and because winning in that channel requires a different discipline than the traditional ones.
The slightly longer version has three parts.
- User behavior has shifted faster than expected. In early 2024 we thought AI search would be a niche thing for years to come. By 2026 it has become a primary channel for certain types of searches, particularly B2B research, local research, and product comparisons. It is moving faster than SEO did in its day.
- The existing disciplines cannot cover it. An SEO agency is built around Google and Bing algorithms. A content marketing agency is built around publishing and engagement. A brand agency is built around visual and verbal identity. None of the three measures or works directly with how a language model describes you.
- Brands experience an acute problem. When an owner or CMO discovers that their business is not mentioned by ChatGPT, they also discover that they do not know where to turn. The existing agencies cannot help in this way, and most internal marketing teams do not have the tools. That creates a gap, and category specialist agencies fill the gap.
It is not an artificial category. It is a discipline that emerged from concrete demand.
What does an AI visibility agency actually do?
Concretely, the work is typically a combination of measurement, strategy, and implementation. Let us take each.
Measurement. It always starts with finding out where you stand. That is what an AI visibility audit does. At Valiss we call it Signal. The audit:
- Asks a series of category questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. The questions a customer in your category actually asks.
- Measures whether your brand is mentioned, where it is placed, and how it is described.
- Compares the answers with your three most important competitors.
- Scores you on five pillars that cover the signals the model weighs.
- Delivers a 10 to 15 page report with an action plan.
Strategy. Once you know your starting point, prioritization follows. Which pattern pulls you down the most? Which pillar should you work on first? What is worth doing in the first three weeks before anything else moves?
Implementation. That is the actual work, and it varies depending on the diagnosis. It can be rewriting the company core descriptive text, building third party citations, adjusting category vocabulary in customer communication, or working with structured data. It is precise craft work, not a checklist.
A good AI visibility agency delivers all three parts. But it starts with measurement. Without measurement, strategy and implementation are guesswork.
How does it differ from an SEO agency?
This question comes up in every intro call. Let us take the differences directly.
- Goal. SEO works for clicks. AI visibility agencies work for mention. SEO wants the user to click your link. AI visibility wants the model to mention you at all.
- Data source. SEO works with Google Search Console and search volumes. AI visibility agencies work with the models directly. We ask the four big models what they say about you. SEO works with ranking on a search results page.
- Optimization. SEO optimizes page by page. AI visibility agencies optimize the entire published picture of the brand. That includes your website, but also press, social media, podcast mentions, and third party indexing.
- Measurement interval. SEO shows daily shifts in ranking. AI visibility agencies show quarterly or semi annual shifts. Models are not updated daily, so the cadence is different.
- Tool stack. SEO uses Surfer, Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Console. AI visibility agencies primarily use the models themselves and proprietary measurement. There are few established third party tools yet.
The two disciplines overlap. A good AI visibility agency will never tell you SEO is dead, because it is not. We tell you that SEO is no longer sufficient.
When should you consider using one?
Three indicators in priority order:
- You have just checked what ChatGPT says about your business, and you are not satisfied with the answer.
- A key person in your organization has asked: "Why doesn't ChatGPT mention us?"
- Your B2B pipeline has shifted, with fewer leads coming via Google and more from "other sources" you cannot identify.
If none of the three indicators are present, you likely have time before the category hits you acutely. That is not a reason to do nothing. It is a reason to do a baseline measurement now, so you have a starting point to compare against later.
If one or more of the three indicators are present, it is worth having a concrete conversation with an agency about what work will move the most, fastest.
What should you ask in an intro call?
If you decide to talk with one or more AI visibility agencies, there are five questions that help you distinguish between those who know what they are doing, and those who are following the trend.
- Which models do you measure directly? A good agency measures at minimum ChatGPT and Gemini, ideally also Claude and Perplexity. Agencies working with only one tool level of data are typically less precise.
- How many competitors do you benchmark us against? Standard practice in the category is at least three competitors, selected with the client. An agency that refuses to benchmark against competitors typically lacks method.
- What is the output of the audit? A good agency delivers a concrete report with a prioritized action plan, not a general report on "AI marketing trends."
- What happens after the audit? Ask about the specific kinds of implementation work they offer. Vague language about "consultant hours" is a warning.
- Who walks the report through with you? A serious provider offers a walkthrough, typically 30 minutes, typically within a short timeframe. An agency that delivers the report over email without a conversation has either built the report with a standardized template or does not have capacity to explain it.
If you would like a concrete conversation with us, or if you want to run an audit as a starting point, run Signal. €690 for a 10 to 15 page report and a 30 minute walkthrough within one business day.
It is not the agency that knows the most about AI in general that helps you the most. It is the agency that measures your specific situation against your specific competitors.

AI first websites: what they are and why they matter
An AI first website is three things at once: built with AI, enriched with AI, and optimized for AI as the visitor. Here is why it is now urgent.
The Monday check: the five minute habit every CMO needs
The most important AI visibility habit you can build is not a dashboard or a tool. It is five minutes with ChatGPT every Monday morning. Here is how.
Three patterns we see in brands that win AI recommendations
We have seen patterns across the AI visibility audits we have run. Brands that get recommended first share three. Here is what they are, and what they are not.
